12-step Alternative Treatment Program

Bridging Session
HALO version

Learn to Handle difficult situations with your loved one.
Help and improve your relationship at the same time.

Depending on your circumstances, one or more of the following fifteen issues can be addressed during your Bridging Session-HALO session:
  1. Recognize and safely respond to any potential for violence as changes are introduced at home.
  2. Learn what triggers your loved one to use alcohol or drugs.
  3. Know what to say and do to support non-using, pro-social behaviors and entry into treatment.
  4. Improve communication with the substance user.
  5. Keep your sanity while your loved one is making you feel insane.
  6. Use positive and negative reinforcement effectively to discourage a loved one's harmful alcohol or other using behaviors.
  7. Master methods for decreasing your stress and taking care of yourself and your own life.
  8. Detach without anger or fear that your significant other will use drugs even more, or become suicidal.
  9. Deal with threats of suicide.
  10. Learn what to tell family and friends about your situation.
  11. Understand the most effective ways to suggest treatment to your loved one, and recognize the most appropriate times to do it.
  12. Learn what non-12-step alcohol and drug treatment options are available, how well they work, and for whom they work best.
  13. Learn about effective approaches for moderating substance use, instead of complete abstinence (see Harm Reduction Coaching).
  14. Respond correctly to their relapses and dead-end attempts at recovery.
  15. Acquire a list of qualified treatment centers that use non-12-step methods.
