HALO Coaching (Helping a Loved One)

How does the HALO method work?

Over time, every relationship -- good or bad -- settles into predictable patterns of behavior and interaction, a homeostasis. For example, in your own situation, you probably bring up your loved one's problem with alcohol and/or drugs in the same basic way each time, which results in the same, basic reaction from the other person. You hit the same brick wall every time.

The premise of HALO Coaching is that you can't wait for your loved one to change; you have to change first. You have to stop yelling and nagging because those actions are not giving you the desired result. When you change, the predictable homeostasis of your relationship changes; your loved one, in turn, will change.

To better illustrate how HALO Coaching works, let's say that you and your partner have been dancing the tango. Every day, you dance the tango; it has become your habit, an important part of your relationship. All of the steps and moves in the dance are predictable and familiar. When Dr. Kern works directly with you, instead of your loved one, you'll learn how to stop "dancing" or communicating with them in that predictable pattern.

Your new actions will de-stabilize the old relationship that has been the comfort zone for the addiction. You changed -- therefore your partner will have to change eventually because there is no one to dance with.

Dr. Kern will brainstorm with you about strategies that will work better than anything you have done before and help you stop dancing the tango with your loved one.
