Harm Reduction Coaching
Harm Reduction Coaching vs. Traditional Psychotherapy
Dr. Kern's role as your personal addiction coach is deliberately different from a typical patient/doctor relationship or client/therapist relationship. As a licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Kern performs at the same high level of professionalism, responsibility and confidentiality that the law requires when doing psychotherapy; however, what happens in coaching sessions is quite different from traditional psychotherapy. This is action-based coaching. Dr. Kern is not there to judge you, preach or force a "my way or the highway" agenda on you. Dr. Kern will recommend a variety of contemporary techniques and tools, but you are the one who chooses which techniques appeal to you most. Dr. Kern only cares about what is a successful strategy for you.
In every session, you and Dr. Kern will talk about your progress managing your addictions and negative behaviors. You'll talk about which techniques are working and which aren't. This is a very organic process. What you do and how you manage your behavior can change from week to week or month to month, because the challenges and problems in your life constantly change.
Harm Reduction Coaching doesn't have a set time period. Dr. Kern will coach you until you feel confident enough to proceed on your own. As a result of Harm Reduction Coaching, you will be equipped with new skills and the emotional motivation to moderate your usage of alcohol, drugs, and other excessive behaviors and feel comfortable doing so.
